Why You Miss the Version of Them That Never Existed

Why You Miss the Version of Them That Never Existed

Written by Chris Josh

You constantly think about them and you miss them.

And...it probably confuses you because you remember how badly they treated you and you know exactly why you left.

So you're probably thinking, "why do I still feel the pain?"

Here's what's really going on here.

You're not really missing the actual person - you're missing the version of them you first met.

You know...the one who was sweet when you first met them in the beginning?

The one who showed you glimpses of who they could be. Yeah - about that...you fell in love with the potential and the promise - not the real person.

The person you hoped they'd become. But that version was never the real deal. It was just a little performance/act, not reality.

So when you grieve, you're grieving someone who never really existed. And that's why it feels impossible to let go.

A part of you wishes that's who the person really is.

Keep this in mind - all you're doing is you're holding onto a hope, not the person you thought they were.

Call out what you're really missing. Right now. Say it with your chest, "I miss who I hoped that person was, not who they actually were."

Recall the real memory. And then let that real memory override the idealized memory.

Every time you miss the good version of that person, remember everything about them in totality - not just the tiny snippets of good moments.

And keep this in mind, you're allowed to grieve the hope that turned out to be just that - just don't make excuses for them.

They showed you their true colors. Believe them.

Rest assured you will find what you're looking for when you stop looking for it.
