3 Things to Do When Your Anger Has Nowhere to Go

You're angry.... And I mean really angry.

But you can't yell... You can't fix it. And you can't make the person who caused it understand.

So it just sits there, burning in your chest.

Here's what to do with that anger.

First, move your body.

Anger is energy, and it needs somewhere to go.

Walk fast or even sprint. Do jumping jacks or pushups. Shake your hands out as if you just washed your hands outdoors and you don't have a towel.

Let your body burn it off so it doesn't burn you up.

Second, say the angry words out loud. But say them where it's safe.

All the things you wish you could say to them, say them. Out loud.

Do it alone in your car, in the shower, or into a voice memo you delete after. Don't hold the words in. Getting them out of your body is what makes the anger lighter.

Third, write down what it's really about.

Under most anger is a hurt. "I'm mad" is usually "I'm hurt" or "I felt disrespected." Name the specific thing that upset you.

Anger isn't bad - it's telling you someone or something crossed a line.

Listen to it and then let it move through you.

Never bottle up anger because it can wear you down and leave you depressed.
